What is Azure Synapse?

Azure Synapse, formerly known as SQL DW, is a limitless analytics tool offered by Azure that supports both Big Data Analytics and Enterprise Data Warehouse services.

Allowing users to perform data queries on their own terms using either serverless resources that are provisioned on demand or at volume. By providing a unified experience for ingesting, preparing, and managing server data for right away BI and Machine Learning capabilities, it advances the capabilities to combine two worlds.

One of the most important elements of a cloud-based, comprehensive big data system is the data warehouse. In a cloud data solution, data is ingested into big data stores from a variety of sources. When the data is ready for complex analysis, SQL analytics employs PolyBase to query the big Data Store, while Hadoop Spark and machine learning algorithms prepare and train the data in the big data store.

[Polybase imports the data into a SQL Analytics Table using common T-SQL searches]

SQL Analytics has the ability to store data in relational tables and columnar storage, which lowers the cost of data storage and enhances query speed. In contrast to conventional database systems, once data is stored, one can perform analytics at scale.

There are four parts to Azure Synapse:

  • SQL Analytics: Complete T-SQL based analytics -( SQL pool -pay per DWU provisioned), (pay per TB processed)
  • Apache Spark
  • Data Integration
  • Studio
